Palm Springs A Year Round Fun Getaway for the Whole Family
Which destination to choose for this year’s upcoming winter? Looking for the perfect getaway from all the snow and blizzards? How about the desert? After all, isn’t Palm Springs A Year Round Fun Getaway for the Whole Family?
Here the temperatures are high and pleasant all year long. Even though many people’s perception for the desert is a dreadful sizzling hot place, once you visit the magnificent Palm Springs area, you’ll learn otherwise.
It is a fabulous welcoming city in the Coachella Valley which is ‘open for visitors’ 365 days a year. This is primarily due to the warm weather (average winter temperatures during the day ranging from 70 to 75 °F) which makes Palm Springs a great holiday destination even during December and January.
Basically, it does not matter during which month of the year you decide to spend some time in Palm Springs. You are bound to be equally amazed by this desert pearl. One of the main advantages of Palm Springs is that there are entertaining events happening all throughout the year. Unlike regular winter getaways, where the only fun thing you could possibly do there is skiing, Palm Springs offers much more.
Some of the exciting events during the winter months include:
- The Palm Springs International Film Festival
It takes place during January and goes on for ten days. Awards are presented to Hollywood’s talented actors, directors and other people from the film industry. Also, the festival includes about 400 screenings of over 200 movies.
- Modernism Week
Held in February, this is one of the largest events of the year. It is a celebration of the mid-twentieth century impressive modern architecture, design and culture. The majority of the buildings in Palm Springs are built in some variation of the Mid Century Modern style – the Desert Modern, which makes them real attractions. During this week there are many events, including architectural tours and lectures and cocktail parties at some of the finest homes open just for the event.
- The Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance
An impressive exhibition of classic vintage automobiles. It features domestic and foreign cars from the period 1969 onwards. It is one of the top ten classic car shows in the world. Again, it takes place in January.
- The Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival and Parade
An ‘equal rights’ event for raising awareness of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. It is a fun celebration full of color and open-minded people, as well as a serious event meant to promote the statement that everybody’s equal. It takes place in the beginning of November. This year, the Desert AIDS Project will have its annual AIDS Walk in conjunction with the parade and AIDS Lifecycle 12 will be there in full force to support the event,, parade and walk.
- Walk of the Inns
A self-guided tour around Palm Springs’ many historic inns and boutiques. During the event, all of them are open for visitors. Free maps are provided for all participants in the walk. The event takes place on December 8th.
- Twelve Days of Christmas
During the first twelve days of December the city celebrates the upcoming Christmas holidays. The almost-two-week-long event includes tree lighting, Festival of Lights Parade, holiday shopping and various concerts.
- Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade
An annual parade which pays respect to the country’s fallen heroes. Those who died in battle defending the name and honour of their fatherland. The parade is followed by a concert and concludes with a display of fireworks. It is usually held on 11th of November and is a good sized and well attended parade because of the many veterans who have retired here.
Apart from these winter events, make sure that Palm Springs offers much more in terms of entertainment and culturally enriching oneself. In a nutshell, this Coachella Valley desert rose is a perfect winter getaway for anybody who values beauty in all its forms.
